The Rotary Club of Kalibo started the New Year with the launching of the Home Reading Program held on January 4, 2007 at Gen. F. Castillo Memorial School, Mabilo, Kalibo, Aklan. the said school is the first recipient of the project. The initiative came from Rtn. Frank and spouse Tessie Kennedy who both worked for many years as member of the school board in New Foundland, Canada. The program is proven effective in the province of New Foundland that shoots out the literacy rate in that area. As such, it gained the support of the local government of New Foundland which funded $1 million dollars grant to support that program. The Kennedy couple thru the Rotary Club of Kalibo and some help from five (5) other Rotary Clubs in New Foundland, Canada is duplicating the project in Aklan to find out if it will also work.
The Home Study Program aims to teach pupils in elementary schools especially Grade III, where the transition period in learning English as the second language begins. It is a whole language approach in a meaningful way by learning all the skills in reading, listening, writing and speaking. The books are appropriate in their grade level that are fictions and informative. This Home Reading Program involves mainly pupils, teachers, parents, school, and the community.
The Home Study Program process are the following: 1. Teacher reads book to class; 2. Students select books to bring home; 3. Students read book to parents or in loco parentis; 4. Students make comments in their notebooks; 5.Students return books to student monitors; and 6. Teacher asks two students to comment in their books the next day in school.
The beauty of this program is that, all materials are being provided for free. Thru the Rotary Club of Kalibo, boxes of brand new books from Canada and America were brought to the school, making sure that each pupil gets one different book each day. Included in the package are free pencils/ballpens and notebooks, too. At the end of the school year, as a sort of motivation and reward system to the pupils, the Rotary Club of Kalibo thru its RY 2007-08 president More Morier, will award prizes to those pupil/s who had the most number of books read. The prize will be awarded during graduation ceremonies of every school year.
A short demonstration of Mrs. Richie Malbas with the parent and few pupils was done during the project launching to show to the parents present how the process is being done.
Present during the launching are: Pres. More Morier, President-Elect Megs Lunn, Past President Berting Nakaya and Rtn. Frank & Ann Tessie Kennedy. The attendance from the parents, pupils and teachers headed by the schools’ Principal – Mrs. Rosalinda A. Malbas and the advisers of the grade 3 class, Mr. Hidson M. Malbas, Mrs. Richie B. Malbas and Ms. Mary Grace Nepomuceno. There are also Barangay officials who represented the community in the persons of Hon. Marrieta Agonias, Hon. Francisco Pallada and Hon. Virgie Alcober, with added support from the school’s PTCA president – Mrs. Emily M. Belocura is an indication of full community support.RC Kalibo plans to expand the Home Study Program to other public schools, time and resources permitting, in the next few months to spread the literacy advocacy to all schools especially to our adopted depressed Barangays./MP
