After five terms, Congressman Jose De Venecia of Pangasinan was replaced by Cong. Prospero Nograles of Davao City as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The change took effect shortly after midnight of Feb. 5.
The position of the speaker was declared vacant on motion of Cong. Mitra of Palawan who moved to declare the speaker position vacant. The motion was voted and resulted to 174 yes, 35 no and 15 abstain. Congressman Nograles was nominated speaker who got unanimous votes. He immediately took his oath of office at dawn of Feb. 5, 2008.
