Rejecting CHED 5–Year Proposal

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) proposed to increase another one year to complete a degree in college. Therefore, the present 4–year bachelor degree courses, if approved, will take five (5) years to complete.

Why prolong the completion of any college degree? This is ill timed and poorly conceived. To me, the proposal must be destined to the bio-degradable garbage can.

If ever the length of studies is increased, it must be in the elementary school. If ever, the additional year of studies must be done in the basic education curriculum. It is in this stage where the children must learn the basics of reading and comprehension, mathe-matics, and science. After the students had “successfully” completed all the requirements in the elementary curriculum, they can easily and surely pass secondary curriculum and then college.

Any student who possesses excellent reading and comprehension can easily complete a college course. They can even pursue a self study course and even be better educated than others.

In connection with this proposal, Sen. Chiz Escudero suggested the following: “1. In lieu of the additional year in college, CHED should work within the existing four years and improve the educational standard without increasing the cost and time on the part of the students and the parents; 2. The government cannot pass the buck to the people when there’s a need to improve and work on a deficiency and inadequacy on the way they do things in the government. If coming at par with the rest of the world is what CHED and the (Malacañang) Palace want for our students, they should start introspecting; 3. The Palace may and can start infusing enough resources to our educational system from early education to tertiary to create the education standard required to fulfill the educational needs and to take advantage of the full potentials of the students; 4. CHED, for its part, can also start reviewing the curricula of those courses they want the 5 year system to start with; 5. They should revisit the curricula in the universities and begin to exact more accountability to those schools that do not deliver; and 6. Malacañang to nix the proposal as it will add more inequalities to access to education.”
