Aklan Projects Food Supply High Demand

BORACAY, Malay, Aklan – There will be a high demand of food supply in Aklan this summer that will be triggered by the booming tourism industry, synchronized national and local elections and series of festivities in the province.

"The Aklan provincial government is currently undertaking a series of programs to ensure not only food security of its residents but also for visiting tourists as well," William Castillo, Aklan acting provincial agriculturist said.

The Department of Tourism is expecting more tourists coming to this resort island this month of May.

Castillo added that fiesta celebrations consume much of the province’s food stocks such that Aklan has to get its food supplies like poultry, livestock and fruits from nearby provinces.

An average of two fiesta celebrations is being held in the province daily.

Some politicians also provide their supporters with food supplies in the duration of the campaign.

Earlier, the National Food Authority (NFA) assured Aklanons that they have enough rice stocks to meet the demand of Aklan.

"Good news is only 15 percent of our farms are affected by the El Nino phenomenon. Those farmers hit did not follow our advise not to plant because of the anticipated El Nino. Nevertheless, majority of farmers in the province are currently being trained to increase food production in the coming months," Castillo added. (PNA) /MP
