PopCom Intensifies Natural Family Planning Method Advocacy

The Population Commission (PopCom), Iloilo City has intensified its call for couples in Western Visayas to practice the natural family planning method.

Popcom regional director Dr. Vicente Molejona said that natural family planning is safe and cheap especially that foreign groups such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has halted funding reproductive health programs in the country.

Molejona admitted that it would take time for people to actually practice the method even if the Catholic Church is actually endorsing it.

PopCom information officer Bebot Serio said, "couples are encouraged to cooperate with their local health workers should they want to embrace the natural family planning program of the national government. The natural family planning method will not work out with only women taking the cudgel," Serio added.

Men are used to letting women do the contraception pills, intra-uterine device (IUD) and even sterilization. But with the natural family planning, men are forced to cooperate or it won’t work at all.

Moreover, men found it too tedious to do the counting, spacing, more so the fertilization stages of their partners. They would rather leave the women to do the planning, according to Serio.

"It sounds too scientific and even complicated to most partners", admitted Serio. Still Popcom is currently working on simple strategies to lure men into understanding the natural family planning method.

In Western Visayas the most commonly used form of contraception among couples are pills and condoms. This is followed by sterilization and IUDs. (PNA) /MP
