ATI Develops Farmer Scientists


The Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) in ASU Campus, Banga, Aklan will hold a training on "The Corn-Based Farmer-Scientists Training Program (FSTP) on December 6 – 10, 2010. This will be held in the ATI Training Hall, ASU Compound, Banga, Aklan.

The participants will come from the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, and Antique who are actively engaged in corn production.

The training aims to change and improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of farmers in corn – based production system.

The 5-day study includes topics in corn-based production system pilot tested in various upland barangays in the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Siquior, Negros Oriental, Compostela Valley, and Mindoro Occidental.

The topics to be discussed are designed to develop participants’ clear understanding of principles, features, and mechanics of Farmers Scientists functions; possess ample ability to conduct actual field lay-outing of experimental plots, carrying out of experimentation, collection of data, analysis, and reporting; and to identify resource complementation and fund sourcing.
To teach the participants are a group of highly trained and experienced trainers. Ms. Guilly Valencia will handle Form Record Keeping, Marketing of Agricultural Products, and Farm Planning.

Dr. Reynaldo A. Comia, a UPLB professor will handle Integrated Nutrient Management, and Corn-Based Farming System. Mr. Tony A. Amejo will discuss Integrated Pest Mgt.; Harvesting and Post harvest of Corn, and Data Gathering, Processing and Analysis.

Ms. Mel J. Maghanoy will handle Growth Stages of Corn, Seed Selection and Breeding; FSTP Experimental Design and Trials. He will conduct, with the participants, field work on soil sample collection, land preparation, Fertilizer/Bio-N Application, Detasseling, Corn Breeding and Data Collection of Leaves, Plant Height and Ear Height.

Ms. Arwena G. Tamayo will handle community organizing, and micro teaching by Ms. Jinah T. Abordo.

Dr. Ambrosio R. Villorente will discuss with the participants the Role of Media In Science and Technology Generation and Utilization. /MP
