Flash Floods Close Down Schools And Offices In Kalibo

Some government offices, banks and other private firms in Kalibo, Aklan closed down Friday, December 10 due to floods.

The flooding was caused by the inter-tropical convergence zone that forced the elementary to the tertiary levels schools in Kalibo to suspend their classes December 8 – 10.

According to the Municipal Disaster and Coordinating Council here, the flooded streets are Desposorio Maagma, Mabini, Crossing Rotunda, Osmena Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Toting Reyes Street and Kalibo Public Market.

Subdivisions in Barangay New Baswang, Andagao and Estancia also experienced flooding.

But according to Engr. Percy Malonesio of the Civil Aviations Authority of the Philippines, commercial flights remained operational at the Kalibo International Airport as there were no advisories of any cancellation.

As early as Wednesday afternoon, warnings have been raised for a threat of flood in Kalibo after the upland town of Libacao announced a possible flooding in the area.

After the devastation of typhoon Frank in Kalibo in 2007, both the Kalibo and the Libacao local governments monitor the possible flooding incidents in these towns.

During the heavy pouring of rains last week, the upper Libacao town first experienced the flooding with the water flowing down to Kalibo. (PNA) /MP
