Mayor Eyes Alternative Venue For Street Vendors

The Iloilo City government is keen on removing all illegal structures and vendors lining the main city streets which are causing traffic.

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog said, "the city government will look for an alternative venue for these street vendors to sell their wares without causing traffic and congestion in the sidewalks."

Mayor Mabilog admitted that the street vendors have been working to support their family but they should be regulated. Street vendors and stalls along the main city streets and the business central area have impeded pedestrians especially on rush hours, he added. They have been eyesores especially in the central business district and do not bid well for foreign investors, said the mayor.

Likewise, the mayor has requested a feasibility study as to where these street vendors can be given an alternative venue to sell their products. He said that the study will make sure that the vendors will be given a safe place for their thriving business. The venue could more likely become a flee market were the public can go and buy, he pointed out.

Mabilog said that it could take some time to fully address the concerns in illegal vendors and stalls all over the city but assured it will be prioritized within his three terms as city mayor.

It is recalled that Mabilog has authored a city ordinance creating a night market in the city but has not fully taken off due to lack of support. Now that he is mayor, he said that he will definitely look into the problems of the street vendors in Iloilo City. (PNA) /MP
