Batan Launches Artificial Reef/Payao

Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez, Batan Mayor Delfina R. Ramos and Vice Mayor Jayner L. Demeterio led the barangay officials of Mandong and Napti in the launching of artificial reef and payao projects these two barangays.
Erwin Pador, regional coordinator of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources represented Dir. Drusila Ester E. Bayate in the launching.
Jackstone type artificial reef is made of cement and steel bars. It is placed in the water which will serve as the breeding places of fishes. Moreover, artificial reef also prevents soil erosion in the coastal area.
Payao is made of bamboo and wood. Two pieces of wood are crossed to each other. At the tip of each wood or bamboo, nets are placed for algae to grow. When there are algae, fishes feed on it. Payao is submerged under water with the use of sinkers.
In his speech, Gov. Marquez emphasized the benefits fisherfolks will derive from artificial reef and payao. He assured the fisherfolks that he will provide more assistance of similar projects in Batan.
Mandong punong barangay Nathaniel More, in his welcome message, expressed his great elation for the realization of the project in his barangay. He said, the project is the first in Batan and glad that it is placed in his barangay.
Mayor Delfina R. Ramos vowed to continue doing the project not only in Mandong and Napti but in all coastal barangays of Batan. She expressed her great appreciation and thanks to Gov. Marquez for the realization of the project. /MP
