Climate scientists believe that human-induced global deforestation is responsible for 18-25 percent of global climate change. The United Nations, World Bank and other leading non-government organizations are encouraging reforestation, avoiding deforestation and other projects that encourage tree planting to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Last September 18, 2008, the Bachelor of Science in Tourism, 3rd year student of Aklan State University – School of Rural Resource Development and Management in Ibajay had their send off activity before they left for an Ecotourism tour in Cebu and Bohol on Sept. 21-25, 2008. The teacher in charge, Ms. Melrose "Megs" S. Lunn led them to hold a TREE PLANTING ACTIVITY, as a requirement on their subject -Ecotourism.
The area for tree planting is on top of the hill of the university where one can see the whole of Ibajay, Aklan. The steps going up are estimated about 100 steps starting from the oval area. They have planted more than 81 trees in the vicinity of ASU – SRRDM campus as a way of paying tribute to the environment. Likewise, they donated some 31 fruit bearing trees seedlings to Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, also in ASU- Ibajay.
They planted 150 trees seedlings and donated some fruit bearing trees to the Agriculture Department, too. They planted mahogany, gmelina and mint trees to name a few. The students enjoyed doing the activity although it was stressful to climb the steps. But they kept going until they fulfilled their part to protect the environment by planting trees. /MP
