Aklan Prov’l Board Mulls Tourism Governing Body

By Boy Ryan Zabal

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Aklan is mulling for the creation of a tourism governing body to formulate policies and programs to further develop Aklan’s tourism industry.
The tourism board is embodied in the proposed provincial ordinance establishing the Tourism Code of Aklan, jointly sponsored by SP members Jose Yap, Gerick Templonuevo, Pedro Garcia and Franklin Quimpo.
The proposed ordinance encourages the provincial government to provide world-class cultural and environment-friendly tourism destinations, bring the benefits of tourism to the rural communities, improve access to infrastructures and alleviate poverty. It discourages migration to the urban areas, and supports the capability of local government units in mandated tourism functions, among others.
Quimpo said, the proposed governing body is headed by the Provincial Governor with the chairperson of the SP Committee on Tourism, Culture and Arts as vice chairperson.
This body is also supported by the Provincial Tourism Officer, Aklan Tourism Council, League of Municipalities and local chapters of commerce and industry.
The Provincial Tourism Officer is the chief implementing arm of the provincial government on matters involving the tourism industry under the direct supervision of the Tourism Governing Board.
Aklan is famous for the powdery white sand beaches of Boracay, the Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival, waterfalls and highland sports.
With the governing body, Manggad it Kalibo, Bugna it Tangalan and the virgin natural beauty of the town of Libacao would be developed into tourism enterprise zones.
The provincial ordinance also provides incentives and recognition to private initiatives related to tourism./MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
