Something Filipino in Top American Retail Hub

Bloomingdale’s, the renowned American department store that can be seen in New York, opened a branch in downtown San Francisco recently at the old Emporium building. Soon, on the fifth floor of Bloomingdale’s, a Filipino Cultural Center will greet shoppers.

MC Canlas of the Filipino-American Development Foundation said the contributions by Filipinos in the South of Market (Street) community, or SOMA, for 80 years were the leverage to negotiate for that space in Bloomingdale’s on a dollar-a-year rent. Filipinos are the only immigrant group thus far that has such an ethnic center in Bloomingdale’s. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
