Directly coming from the Cabinet meeting at Malacanang, Sec. Nasser C. Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform arrived in Kalibo, July 10. He brought relief to DAR-Aklan employees and assessed the extent of the damage wrought by Typhoon Frank. The Secretary turned over P400,000.00 to Atty. Daniel Y. Martelino, PARO-Aklan as financial assistance to 107 DAR employees, seven of whom their houses were totally destroyed and inhabitable, five partially damaged and the rest whose houses were ruined by flash flood and mudflow that destroyed home fixtures, personal effects and other properties. Sec. Pangandaman also turned over relief goods to Ms. Helen Laserna, of the DAR Employees Foundation.
Sec. Pangandaman was also appraised of the situation affecting 4,553 Aklanon farmers who were directly affected by the typhoon. The initial data show agrarian reform beneficiaries coming from eleven agrarian reform communities in Aklan were badly damaged. Hardly hit were those coming from Kalibo, Numancia, Madalag, Malinao, Makato, Libacao, and Ibajay.
Equally alarming is the condition of CARP’s major projects in Aklan especially the Timbaban Bridge connecting the municipality of Madalag to Malinao. Partial estimated damage to CARP infrastructure projects in Aklan runs up to P30 M.
Sec. Pangandaman together with his party led by Head Executive Assistant Atty. Jim Coleto and OIC Director Fely Banares pledged to immediately look into these concerns and set directives to address these. /MP
