Tribu Banggoy of Buenasuerte, Nabas, Aklan represented Aklan in the recently held One Visayan, One People, One Destiny held on March 11, 2010 at Roxas City, Capiz during the "sadsad" festival.
Some 47 dancers and drummers from Buena-suerte, Nabas, Aklan who were performers of Tribu Banggoy in the traditional Nabas Bariw Festival showed their awesome and most applauded performance at Villareal Stadium, Roxas City, Capiz during the gathering of three Visayan regions (6, 7 & 8). The participants showcased their respective festivals.
The performers and the festival were introduced by this writer, the Information Officer, designate of LGU Nabas, Aklan.
Bariw festival is held every 14th and 15th of May in celebration with the Religious Fiesta in honor of Patron St. Isidore, the Worker in Nabas.
This festival started in 2003 at the time of former Mayor Gladys P. Garcia through the initiative of incumbent Mayor Romeo M. Dalisay. He was then SB member and chairman on Social Activities. The Nabas Tourism Officer designate is Mr. Dhen M. Roquero.
Bariw festival aims at promoting Nabas’ tourism potentials and cottage industry products like hats, mats, bags, and other decorative materials made of Nabas bariw plants.
The affair is for two days with Mardi Grass, a Street dancing competition involving folks from the town’s 20 barangays. All participants are dressed with various colorful bariw costumes accompanied by drums and other indigenous instruments.
Tribu Banggoy is a champion for two consecutive years in street dancing and presentation categories. Also in the Higante Parade held on January 13, 2010, one of the highlights of the Sto. NiƱo Ati-Atihan Festival Kalibo, Aklan. This group was awarded the second prize. Behind the success of the said group are the relentless efforts of the barangay council headed by their Punong Barangay Felix Palomata with the full support of barangay kagawad Margaret Z. Casidsid who served as coach. Tribu Banggoy, keeps up the good works and good luck to the forthcoming 7th Annual Bariw Festival of Nabas on May 14 – 15, 2010. /MP
