To commemorate the signing of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Aklan chapter held an afternoon program on Wednesday, August 12 at PRC Headquarters, Poblacion, Kalibo, Aklan.
The IHL was signed during the 1949 Geneva Conventions where the Philippines is one of the signatories. In 1999, Executive Order No. 134 was approved and signed by the President of the Philippines designating the whole month of August of every year as IHL month.
Governor Carlito S. Marquez was represented by former Kalibo Mayor Diego M. Luces. He reads Marquez’ message.
Atty. Ronquillo C. Tolentino, chairman of the Board of Directors, PRC Aklan Chapter discussed the importance and significance of IHL to the people of the world in his message. Ms. Arcely P. Pelayo, PRC Aklan Administrator welcomed the guests, Red Cross volunteers from the 17 town of Aklan and other visitors.
Elisa O. Apolinario read and discussed the seven principles of the Red Cross. Ms. Mary Joe B. Galeon explained the application and protection of the Red Cross Emblem and Activities. She also discussed the objectives of the IHL. /MP
