Aklan Interlocal Health Zone Takes Frontline In The “Battle Against Rabies”

By Hazel T. Dalida

Rabies is considered as one of the most fatal diseases affecting today the Filipino people. Around 350-400 Filipinos die of the disease annually, statistics reveal.
Although the government is continuously pushing for the campaign for rabies prevention and control, factors such as the local government’s financial incapacity and the lukewarm support of pet owners are hindering the success of rabies disease eradication.
Relative to this, the Southwestern Aklan Interlocal Health Zone has considered the "Rabies Control Program" as priority project to strengthen the government’s effort.
Health Zone chairperson Mayor Ramon Legaspi of the Municipality of Makato along with the other local chief executives and municipal health officers of the other member municipalities (Numancia, Makato, Malinao, Madalag and Lezo) had officially launched the project recently in Lezo. Director Lydia S. Depra – Ramos of the Center for Health Development, Western Visayas was the guest of honor during the occasion. She expressed her high optimism for program success as she observed the sincere commitment of those involved in the program to persevere in its noble cause for man’s protection against the dreaded disease. The most vital element of the program was provided by the CHDWV thru a donation of 100 vials of Rabisin per municipality. Highlights of the launching included animal vaccination and castration conducted by personnel from the Department of Agriculture of the five municipalities.
Although vaccination is an important factor for the success of the program, it is also believed that a proper education for responsible pet ownership is an important contributing element of the program success.
The Rabies Control Program is a continuing project of the Southwestern Aklan Interlocal Health Zone in coordination with the Department of Health and Department of Agriculture. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
