Rebaldo Eyes Reelection In 2007

By Boy Ryan Zabal

Kalibo mayor Raymar Rebaldo has announced his intention to run for re election as mayor of Kalibo next year. He revealed his plan after winning an electoral protest against former vice mayor William Lachica recently. Rebaldo, who is seeking his third and last term next year, was undecided to seek another term during the course of the revision of ballots on Electoral Case No. 131.
But, when Judge Eustaquio Terencio confirmed him as the duly elected mayor and junked the complaint of Lachica, he openly declared he is ready to serve this town for another term. Rebaldo said there are "three sure bets" in the administration camp: incumbent Sangguniang Bayan members Mark Quimpo, Lilian Tirol and Gregorio Malapad. Among the initial ‘nominees’ for the remaining five slots are Benny Tirazona, George Quimpo and Neddy Villanueva, who all lost in the 2004 local elections for Sangguniang Bayan. "I’m being wooed to run for another term by our political local leaders to continue the development programs in the barangays," he said.
Rebaldo said he welcomed the challenge of his political leaders for the 2007 local elections supposedly a mayoral face-off between him and Lachica. Earlier, Rebaldo’s former vice mayoralty candidate Apolonio Zaraspe III announced he is running for mayor next year. Rebaldo stressed, he would rely heavily on his track record of good performance for the past five years, particularly in providing the basic services to underprivileged sector of Kalibo.
"Our efforts should now be consolidated to pursue programs for our people," he said. His local party is considering at least two names – three-termer councilors Melanie Tolentino and Ariel Fernandez – to fight incumbent vice mayor Nilda Tambong for vice mayor.
Boracay Police Chief Reassigns
Boracay – Chief Insp. Jess Bagsic-Mendez is leaving for a United Nations (UN) mission in East Timor. Mendez, chief of the Boracay Special Tourist Protection Office (BSTPO), was the personal choice of former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Arturo Lomibao to spearhead the Boracay police force to prove their commitment in supporting the tourism department projects by providing tourist-trained policemen and a modern P10-million police station.
"I thanked Aklan Gov. Carlito S. Marquez and Supt. William Macavinta for their trust and confidence during my police assignment in the island," stressed Mendez. His assignment in East Timor is part of his career advancement in the police service. Mendez was UN Kosovo peacekeeper in 2001 and was Lomibao’s chief of security prior to his assignment in Boracay last December 2005.
He belongs to PNP Academy Class of 1997 and was the former security aide of former PNP chief Hermogenes Ebdane. Mendez replaced Supt. Remegio Gregorio, also a UN Kosovo peacekeeper, as directed by Lomibao to keep the newly-built police station ‘tidy’. Mendez, in his almost 10 months stint in the island, was lauded for his no-nonsense implementation of municipal ordinances and his close cooperation with the local government of Malay led by Mayor Ceciron Cawaling and non-government organizations in the island. PNP has designated Senior Insp. Christopher Prangan as current chief of police. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
