French Pug KO’s Philippines’ Domingo For WBF Title

Frenchman Frederic Patrac proved to be a hard nut to crack as he scored a smashing ninth round stoppage over Philippine bantamweight champion Michael Domingo in a 12-round battle for the World Boxing Foundation (WBF) bantamweight title. The fight was held on October 4 in the resort city of Agde, France.
Fighting before a hometown crowd at the Palais des Sports, the former European champion displayed "an excellent performance as he outfought and out-boxed Domingo but never seem to hurt him", wrote boxing journalist Wolfgang Schiffbauer.
In the fateful ninth round, Patrac (20-7-1, 11 KO’s) punished the visitor from Cebu City, Philippines with an assortment of punches and flattened the gallant Filipino fighter. Domingo, fighting for a world crown for the first time, impaired to 26-15-3 with 11 KO’s. WBF Philippine supervisor Alex P. Vidal nevertheless congratulated the durable Domingo, one of the gems in the fabled ALA Stable, who was accompanied by manager Samuel Gello-ani and trainer Edmund Villamor "for giving the French crowd some anxious moments" before capitulating.
Domingo, a native of Libac, Sultan Kudarat, reportedly engaged Patrac in a phone-booth brawl early in the second and third rounds and threw some combinations that rattled the hometown superstar. WBF President Mick Croucher said he was glad that two outstanding fighters from Europe and Asia slugged it out for the WBF diadem and provided one of the most exciting world title fights in France this year.
Croucher also lauded international promoter Olaf Schroeder for the successful staging of the championship bout even as he exhorted other promoters in Asia and the United States to put up a similar WBF-sanction card. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
