Science High School Students Win Speech Contest


Bryan Jhon Jereza Subong walked away with the championship plaque and a gift pack in the "Voice of Our Youth" impromptu speaking contest. The contest was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kalibo as one of the annual projects under the literacy program. The speech contest aims to achieve better listening, better thinking and better speaking and to prevent stage fright in public speaking.
The speech contest was held in the Rotary Livelihood and Training Center, Andagao, Kalibo, Aklan on October 10, 2006. Some 12 contestants participated from the Dela Cruz Institute of Business and Industry, Regional Science High School for Region VI and Aklan National High School for Arts and Trades.
The participants expounded on the topic, "Though I Walk In The Valley of Darkness, I Fear No Evil For You Are With Me. What does this Quotation Mean to You?" This topic was selected out of the five topics placed in one sealed envelope each.
Bryan Jhon Jereza Subong is a fourth year high school student of the Regional Science High School For Region VI, Kalibo, Aklan. The first runner up is Meljan Torres, also a Regional Science High School For Region VI student. All the contestants are members of the Interact Clubs in their respective schools being organized and supported by the Rotary Club of Kalibo. All those who participated were awarded certificate of participation.
Bryan will represent the Rotary Club of Kalibo to the Zone IV Speech Contest to be held in Roxas City sometime in November this year. Meljan Torres, the first runner up of the Regional Science High School For Region VI will serve as alternate for Bryan.
If Bryan won in Roxas City, he will vie for the district level contest where the winner will receive P15,000. He will also represent RI District 3850 to the national contest where the champion will be awarded P50,000 and P40,000 for the runner-up. The contestant and his coach will be provided free round trip transportation expenses, hotel accommodation and meals in the venue of the contest.
President Gus Solmirano of the Rotary Club of Kalibo called the program to order; Rtn. Efren led the invocation. The Board of judges was composed of PP Botoy Villorente, chief judge and other members were Dir. Mona Magayanes, Ann Gel Sodusta and PE More Morier; PP Vady Marin delivered the closing remarks and Contest Chair Sec. Megs Lunn served as facilitator/emcee.
