Chiz Resigns From NPC; Defers 2010 Plan Announcement

Sen. Chiz Escudero last week bared his resignation from the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC). He asked for more time to decide on his plans for the 2010 polls.

The 40-year old maverick politician, who was a member of NPC since 1998, cited three reasons for the surprise announcement before a jampacked crowd of allies and supporters at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan, Metro Manila.

I believe whoever plans to run for president of the nation must have no party affiliation. His only party is the Philippines and his party mates are the Filipinos), Escudero said in a speech.

Only a united citizenry, and not a single party or group, can solve the many deep-seated problems of the country.

Escudero, the youngest among the presidential frontrunners, also said that political parties have become obstacles to genuine and meaningful change.
(To me, it is not proper for a party to dictate what a candidate must do because he cannot demand responsiilities of government abuses if the culprits belong to his party), he said.

"Papaano niya i-aabolish ang (How can he abolish) pork barrel at i-institute line item budgeting kung kasama niya ay puro kongresista at puro senador?" (if the partymates are all congressmen and senators), Escudero asked.

The Bicol lawmaker also deferred announce-ment of his plans for the 2010 elections, saying that he needed more time to decide for himself what to do next now that he is his own man.

"This should be the first test of leadership of any putative candidate – for him to decide on his own and take full responsibility for the decision on whether not to run and what position to run for," he said.

(I want to prove to you that I do things for reason, not for any interest. Not to anybody but for the people.) /MP
