A tourist guide went on a shooting rampage. He grabbed the service firearm of a security guard at the Caticlan Jetty Port and Terminal in Brgy. Caticlan, Malay, Aklan over the weekend. Police Insp. Eduardo Gillera, chief of the Malay PNP, identified the guide as Vincent Christian "Ranger"" Batuigas, of Dasmariñas, Cavite. He was a tourist guide and photographer of a Korean commissioner in the resort island. Other jetty port guards immediately shot Batuigas.Batuigas succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds around 7:30 p.m. while being treated at the provincial hospital where he was brought hours after the shooting. Gillera said Batuigas grabbed the 38 revolver of Rommel Liza of Brgy. Agbago, Ibajay, Aklan, a security guard of Ati-Atihan Security Agency, around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, last week.
The Caticlan jetty port, the main jump-off point to the famous island of Boracay, is a major economic enterprise of the provincial government of Aklan and part of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway where roll-on, roll-off vessels dock. "Batuigas was accosted by the security guard as part of the security measures. He entered the jetty port wearing only his upper shirt," Gillera claimed. After he snatched the handgun of Liza, Batuigas tried to shot the security guard. But the gun misfired Liza then ran towards his quarters and got another firearm, the police said. Batuigas fled across the street of the jetty port and opened fire his handgun to the jetty port security guards and Malay PNP personnel stationed thereat.
"Even Korean tourists were not spared by his unusual behavior. They scampered for safety during the shooting rampage," Gillera said. It was not clear who fatally shot Batuigas. He was hit on the abdomen, back and right hand in a 30-minute gun battle.
No police officers and civilians were injured in the shooting. Batuigas was brought to the Caticlan Baptist Hospital for treatment after the shooting incident. He was later rushed to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital, Kalibo, about 66 kilometers away. "We are still investigating why Batuigas seemed to have lost his mind," Gillera said.
