Alarmed by the growing disunity of existing Aklan media organizations, Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc (PAPI) president Juan "Johnny" Dayang is urging its members to unite and resolve the conflicts, once and for all. Dayang, a self-made Aklanon journalist and chairman emeritus of Aklan Press Club (APC), told delegates of Aklan in the recent three-day Cotabato Media summit in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato "to explore the possibilities of unifying the Aklan media groups."
Aklan is represented by Arnel Relampago of Kalibo Cable Television, Inc. (KCTV) and Rolly Herrera of Binirayan Journal, both members of Aklan Media Forum (AMF) in the media summit. Dayang said a PAPI Media Summit is slated on the last week of October in Boracay Island and Kalibo to provide a venue for Aklanon writers, editors, publishers and public information officers to discuss the latest trends in journalism and communication and a forum. To thresh out any conflict between established media organizations in the province.
Aklan has three media groups, namely, APC, Aklan United Media Association (AUMA) and the newly formed AMF. "This (media summit) is a unifying factor to resolve the disagreements arising from the media groups and likewise to enhance the journalistic skills of our members," Dayang stressed. He said this could be an opportunity for him to bring closer to Aklan the staging of media summit and seminar and the PAPI’s 32 years of leadership and advocacy to his province mates.
PAPI has organized Strategic Communications Seminar Workshop on June 23 in Makati City and at the Cotabato Media Summit on August 26-27, 2006, he said, adding, this could be done in Aklan with the support of existing media organizations and the provincial government. /MP
