Aklan Student Writers Win Awards
In Writing Workshop
High school student writers from different schools in Aklan received major awards at the recently concluded Basic Journalism Seminar Workshop initiated by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) held in Bacolod City.
The Aklanon student writers joined the last batch of the seminar workshop with the student writers of Negros Occidental on August 28-30 in the city of Bacolod. Other Aklanon students writers joined the batch with Capiz students on August 14 – 16.
In the Bacolod City batch, Bryan John Subong of the Regional Science High School, Kalibo was adjudged as 2nd Overall Outstanding Participant for garnering three awards - Best in Editorial Writing (Filipino), Best in Sportswriting and Best in Feature Writing (English).
Subong and another RSHS staffer of the Scholar’s Gazette, Jubelle Arboleda were also adjudged as Best in Photojournalism. The two were accompanied by Adelfa Mostajo, school paper adviser.
The delegates of Linabuan National High School also garnered major awards in the workshop. Christaline Ybañez got 1st place in Editorial Writing (Filipino); Fatima Grace R. Reyes, 1st place in Newswriting (Filipino) and 5th place in Sportswriting (Filipino). Mary Love Juanico of the same school was also awarded as 7th place in Sportswriting Filipino. The group also got the Best in Photojournalism award. They were accompanied by school paper adviser Ana S. Andrada.
The lone participant of Aklan National High School for Arts and Trades (ANHSAT), Marvelous Grace Andrada was also awarded as Best in Sportswriting (English) and also cited as Best in Photojournalism.
Mostajo and Andrada said a total of 114 student writers joined the seminar workshop in Bacolod City.
PAG-IBIG INAUGURATES NEW AKLAN OFFICE
Pag-IBIG-Aklan inaugurated its new home at the 3rd Floor of Garcia Building at C. Laserna St., Kalibo, recently. Pag-Ibig Aklan has 11,212 members in the province.
The inauguration was graced by no less than its President and Chief Executive Officer, Atty. Romero Federico Quimbo. The affair was also attended full force by Pag-IBIG officials from Regions 6, 7 and 8, as well as Aklan’s and Kalibo’s provincial and local officials respectively, heads and representatives of other government agencies and the media.
In his message, Atty. Quimbo stressed," Pag-IBIG is moving into its new office to bring its services closer to the members.
"Pag-IBIG Fund is owned by the members. As of 2005, it has a net income of P7.4 billion and 75 percent of this is distributed back to members".
Pag-IBIG-Aklan Office OIC Maribel Tolentino said that "of the 11,212 members in the province, 1,419 are currently availing multi-purpose loans while 197 are housing loan borrowers."
"We even serve some members of nearby towns of Antique province like Pandan and Libertad. They say it is cheaper and faster to go to Aklan Pag-IBIG Office than in the Regional Office in Iloilo City to apply for loans or to transact other business matters," Tolentino revealed.
Tolentino further said that Pag-IBIG-Aklan is currently sustaining its campaign to attract more members. In Boracay Island alone, she said 60 percent of the establishments she had visited to encourage Pag-IBIG membership have already registered.
According to her, an employee in the public or private sector who receives a minimum salary of P4,000 a month will only have to shell out P80.00 monthly contribution while his employer will give the P80.00 counterpart. As a member, he is then entitled to avail of a multi-purpose loan or a housing loan from Pag-IBIG after paying a stipulated number of contributions.
Pag-IBIG fund has recently amended its housing loan guidelines, effectively lowering the interest rates while increasing the loan-to-collateral ratio and payment period for its most popular loan package.
Pag-IBIG Fund is the country’s biggest single housing loan provider.
Its new office in Aklan is now manned by three personnel headed by Maribel Tolentino as Officer-in-Charge. Prior to its transfer to its new home, Pag-IBIG Aklan served its members at the third floor of the Capitol.

AKLAN’S 2006 ALAY LAKAD HAD BIGGEST PARTICIPATION EVER

This year’s Alay Lakad, held jointly by the provincial government of Aklan and the municipality of Kalibo September 8, the first time on a Friday has the biggest participation ever, according to Rep. Florencio T. Miraflores of the Lone District of Aklan at the program preceding the dawn walk held at the Goding Ramos Park, Provincial Capitol Grounds, Kalibo, Aklan.
For this, he congratulated the joint leadership of Aklan Governor Carlito S. Marquez, Vice Governor Ronquillo C. Tolentino and Kalibo Mayor Raymar Rebaldo for the resolve to hold it on a Friday with the aim of encouraging more participation from the civic education, business and the government sectors.
The annual Walk for a Cause is undertaken to generate funds to support socio-economic projects of Out of School Youths. For several years already, however, part of the funds collected helped send many poor but deserving Aklanon students to school.
Kalibo Mayor Raymar Rebaldo said the Alay Lakad has given the municipality the financial capability to send poor students to school and to date, some have already graduated and are gainfully employed.
On the other hand, the provincial government, through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWDO) had been paying for the tuition fees of needy graduating college students to ensure that they graduate from their respective courses.
Gov. Marquez thanked the walk participants for joining the activity, saying their effort was a fruitful sacrifice for Aklan’s disadvantaged youth.
As in previous Alay Lakads, there were three starting points for the early morning walk - Tigayon Elementary School with Gov. Carlito S. Marquez, Vice Gov. Ronquillo C. Tolentino, Lt. Col Earl D. Baliao and Maj. Antonio C. Serrano of the Philippine Army; Pook Airport Crossing, led by Congressman Florencio T. Miraflores, DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Victorina S. Laroza and Sr.Insp. Arnold P. Ardiente; and Camp Pastor Martelino, with Kalibo Mayor Raymar Rebaldo, Vice Mayor Nilda Tambong, Augusto G. Solmirano, Rotary Club of Kalibo President and Chairperson of this year’s Alay Lakad, and P/Supt. William S. Macavinta, Aklan Police Provincial Office Director as leaders.
To generate more funds and as an added feature to the Alay Lakad, raffle tickets were sold, and drawn during the program with lucky winners receiving cash of P5,000, P3,000 and 2,000 as major prizes, plus other valuable consolation prizes.
"Sa Bawat Hakbang Kabuhayan Para sa Kabataan" is the theme of this year’s Alay Lakad. Last year’s Alay Lakad in Aklan was held on a Monday. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
