"Honoring Heroes" is the theme of the Speechfest Kalantiao Toastmasters Club conducted to commemorate its first year anniversary. The contest was held in Capt. Gil Mijares Memorial Bldg., Poblacion, Kalibo, Aklan in the morning of Thursday, August 31.
Some 13 contestants participated in the contest. Seven were high school students while six were college.
Cresil Lagatic of Aklan College got the first prize in the table topics category which consisted of P1,000 cash, six months scholarship for caregivers at San Lorenzo College and a one year free consultation, courtesy of Dr. Cynthia Dela Cruz, President of Aklan Medical Society (AMS). Her coach is Ms. Erlinda Albito.
In the prepared speech participated by high school students, Jayfer Salcedo won the first prize. He is a student of Northwestern Visayan Colleges. He was awarded P1,000 cash and one year free medical consultation with Dr. Cynthia Dela Cruz, president of AMS. His coach is Mr. Cyryl Fernandez. Second to him is Joseph Rowen T. Dela Cruz, a student of Infant Jesus School. He was awarded P750 cash. His coach is Ms. Rhea Nalaunan. Joseph is an honor student. He got forensic award in English and Filipino and the best debater during their inter-year debates.
He is also the editor in chief of their school paper.
Sarah Marie M. Suejico got third place and was awarded P500 cash. She is a second year student of Tangalan National High School, Tangalan, Aklan.
At 14 years old, Sarah was first honor in first year, won second place in the interclass speechfest, third in declamation and third in story telling. Sarah is president of their class room organization.
In the college level (table topics), Joyce Manzanares of STI College got second place. She was awarded P750 cash. Her coach is Mr. Juny M. Casimero.
Third place went to Sajid Pelayo of the Northwestern Visayan College. He was coached by Mr. Kim Arnilla. He received P500.00.
All the top three winners for both high school and college levels received one year paid subscription to Madyaas Pen, trophy, plaque and gift pack from Bread and Butter and Smart.
All the contestants were given certificate of participation and the coaches, certificate of appreciation.
The Find Your Voice Speech contest was sponsored by the Kalantiao Toastmasters Club with the Rotary Club of Kalibo and the Ati Atihan town of Kalibo with Mayor Raymar A. Rebaldo.
It was also held with the cooperation of the Madyaas Publishing Company, Bread and Butter, Blue Star, San Lorenzo College, DIBI and Aklan Medical Society. AMA computer Learning Center provided the computer and services for the tabulation of data.
Kalantiao Toastmasters Club is chartered in March 2005 with Dr. Ambrosio R. Villorente as charter president. It was organized with the hard work of CL Melrose S. Lunn and with the all out support of Toastmasters Club in Bacolod City. Kalantiao Toastmasters Club today is under the presidency of TM Mona S. Magayanes.
