Cardinal Sin: A Jovial Prince of the Church *

* A message of Atty. Edelita F. Reyes, President, AGMRMF read by Ms. Arwena Tamayo during A Tribute To Jaime L. Cardinal Sin held on August 31, 2006 at Museo It Akean, Kalibo.
On the occasion of his 78th birth anniversary, and the opening of the exhibits at the Museo It Akean in his honor, it is proper to recall the role played by the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin in the founding of the Archbishop Gabriel M. Reyes Memorial Foundation, Inc. (AGMRMFI). It was through his initiative that sometime in the late 70’s a group of Aklanons in Manila met with him at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center to make plans to raise funds to help build the Bishop’s house in Kalibo. That meeting saw the organization of the AGMRMFI.
As the foundation is close to the heart of Cardinal Sin, so is the Cardinal close to the hearts of the officers and members of the Foundation. It is for this reason that the Aklanons in Manila did not fail to visit the Cardinal in Villa San Miguel every chance they got. On his birth month Aklanons are scheduled a particular day to greet him. Aside from enjoying the refreshing ambiance of Villa San Miguel we also got a chance to savor the sumptuous "merienda" prepared for us by the Cardinal. Most of all, we enjoyed singing Aklanon songs much as the Cardinal enjoyed listening to them. His favorite Aklanon song is "Oyang" which invariably brought a smile to his face and made him join in the singing. Christmas time is also another occasion to visit the Cardinal. Again, he enjoyed listening to Christmas carols in Aklanon dialect.
We remember Cardinal Sin as a jovial Prince of the Church, one who has the knack to intersperse his homilies with humor, one who came to any appointment not on time, but before the time.
The officers and members of the Foundation commend the staff and volunteers in Aklan for mounting the exhibits to honor an illustrious Aklanon. The younger generation of Aklanons will surely learn more about him when they visit the exhibits. /MP mailto:madyaas_pen@yahoo.com
