Detained Former President Wants Home On New Year

Manila, Philippines (AP) – Arrested ex-Philippine Pres.Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has asked a court to allow her to welcome the new year in her upscale residence after spending Christmas in detention.

Judge Jesus Mupas earlier rejected Arroyo’s plea to celebrate Christmas and New Year at home citing security reasons. However, Mupas allowed her family to join her in celebrating the holidays at her hospital suite in the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Quezon City.

Lawyer Laurence Arroyo asked Mupas on Monday, Dec. 26 to reconsider and allow her to be at home on New Year ’s day.

Court officer Felda Domingo said Mupas will be on holiday leave until Jan. 6 and may not be able to deal with her plea.

Mupas ordered Arroyo arrested last month for allegedly ordering the rigging of the 2007 senatorial elections. She denied the charge /MP
