Kalibo Ati-atihan Festival 2012 Activities

The month of January is Ati-atihan season in Aklan. Almost all the municipalities in the province celebrate Ati-atihan in January like Altavas, Batan, Makato, Libacao, Malay, and Ibajay.

But it is in Kalibo, the capital town of Aklan, the most attended annual festival, most intense, hot, comical, unique, and original.

This year 2012 Ati-atihan is a two week festival which official started on January 1. It will culminate in a religious procession on Sunday evening, January 15.

The 14 days Ati-atihan festival activities are:

1. Jan. 1–15, Spiritual Street Dancing
2. Jan. 6, Search for Mutya & Lakan It Akean
3. Jan. 6–15, 9-Day Novena, and Paeapak/Pahilot at Kalibo Cathedral
4. Jan. 9 – Blessing and grand opening Salvo of the Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-atihan Festival.
5. Jan. 9–15, Ati-atihan Bazaar at Veterans Avenue, Kalibo Ati-atihan Trade Fair; Kaean-an Sa Plaza; Magsaysay Park Food, Drinks & Party Festival
6. Jan. 9 – Pag-hinugyaw it mga Barangay Sa Kalibo
7. Jan. 10 – 11, Pagdayaw kay Sr. Sto. Niño
8. Jan. 10 – 16, Visual Arts Exhibits, Museo It Akean
9. Jan. 13 – Higante Contest Festival Parade; Jan. 13 – Sadsad Panaad of Socio Civic and religious groups; Higante Party; Jan. 14 – Tribal, Modern, Balik Ati and Individual Ati-atihan contest; Hornada at 12 noon at St. Joseph the Baptist Cahtedral; Fireworks Display at 11 pm, Magsaysay Park.
10. Jan. 15 – Kapistahan ni Sr. Santo Niño, Dawn Penitential Procession at 4 a.m., transfer of Santo Niño Image and Pilgrims’ Mass at 7 a.m. Kalibo Cathedral.
Religious Procession starting 3 p.m. passing major streets of Pob., Kalibo, and Pagpadungog at 7 a.m. Kalibo Magsaysay Park.

Ati-atihan Contest Participants

The Kalibo Ati-atihan Foundation, Inc. (KASAFI) announced there are 30 tribes accepted to participate in the 2012 Ati-atihan contest as of January 2, 2012. According to KASAFI, there are five (5) tribe groups entered for modern category; eight (8) in Balik Ati; eight (8) in Tribal small; and nine (9) in Tribal Big.

The distributions of participating groups are: Kalibo 15 or 50 percent, Malinao – 6 or 20 percent, Makato – 4 or 13.33 percent, Numancia and Lezo – 2 or 6.67 percent each and Banga 1 or 3.33 percent.

The Small Group Original Tribal must have a minimum of 30 members while the Big Group Original Tribal must have a minimum of 60 members. The modern group must have a minimum of 40 members.

HIGANTE CONTEST

“Pinoy Superheroes & Fictional Characters” is this year’s theme for Higante Contest. KASAFI reminded the participants to observe the theme. They must endeavor to send a happy, positive message to the viewers and spectators using any imaginary character or icon of local origin. Entries are accepted until January 6.

The Higante figures must be eight (8) feet high but not higher than 12 feet from the ground level. The judging will take place at 2 pm on Friday, Jan. 13 and the whole day of Saturday, Jan. 14. The contestants will be evaluated as follows: relevance – 25 percent, creativity – 30 percent, artistry – 30 percent, and audience impact and appeal – 15 percent. /MP
